Issues

This section lists issues - problems on the street network and related matters.

Issues always relate to some geographical location, whether very local or perhaps city-wide.

You can create a new issue using the button on the right.

Listed issues, most recent first, limited to the area of Histon and Impington Active Travel:

  • Buxhall School/Greanleas cycleway

    Tom McKeown // 1 thread

A new path is being added to the west side of the B1049 to connect the Greanleas estate to the Buxhall farm school.  It is too narrow for shared used.  Can we improve this?

  • A14 Roundabout J32 Works

Created by Joe Adam // 1 thread

The A14 works have closed the east side pavement/cyclepath for some amount of time.

This either forces people to cross the rode via 4 toucan crossings (and cycle or walk up a very narrow stretch) which is technically not a cycle path I believe.  Alternatively people have to cycle on road across a busy 2 lane 60mph limit roundabout.

  • Cottenham road

    Tom McKeown // 1 thread

The mouth of Cotteham Road is wide and fast. How do we get this improved? Especially in the context of the new school.

  • Traffic management works that are bad for cyclists and pedestrians

Created by Cllr Ian Manning // 8 threads

I've recently moved to be the Lib Dem lead on the County Council's Highways & Infrastructure committee.

I want to start working through in detail bad and good TM examples with officers to understand whether it's specific sets of contractors that are poor, whether they aren't compliant with the current policy and/or whether I agree with our officers about whether they are.

For this I need a Cambridgeshire wide list of both good and bad, with locations - so it would be good to get some from Cambridge and other nearby Cycle Campaigns.

  • B1049/The Green Histon roadworks 8 April

Created by Jonathan Gough // 1 thread

I've read that there are to be roadworks on the B1049 in Histon at the Green, which means temporary traffic lights and the closure of the end of Impington Lane.  I can't find many details but the local HisImp News paper says it is starting 8th April for 8 weeks.

I'm concerned about cycle & pedestrian access to Impington Lane from the B1049 during this period and whether access will have been fully considered.  Turning onto Impington Lane coming from the South normally quite dangerous as the road is narrow (hopefully to be improved by the works!)

  • #camcyclequest - a treasure hunt by bike for the 2019 Festival of Cycling

Created by David Earl // 1 thread

We are planning a treasure hunt for the 2019 Cambridge Festival of Cycling in September.

The idea is to produce a pocket-size, attractively-produced booklet with a suggested route and clues to solve, items to collect and so on, which will be sold for a modest price. There would be a prize.

This topic is a place to discuss ideas for this. I (David Earl) will be taking the lead in getting this together. Roxanne and Anna are seeking funding partners.

If you'd like to help, please say so in the thread.

Just one thing though - please don't put clue suggestions or answers here! If you do chances are people taking part will have read them, which rather spoils the fun.

  • Meadows Centre and Buchan Street consultation

It is proposed that a new Community Hub is built on the site of the Meadows.

This will replace both the current Meadows Community Centre and Buchan Street Neighbourhood Centre, with the new facility integrating priority community groups and activities into this one new community space. In addition to the new Community Hub, the scheme will deliver approximately 100 affordable homes in total across the two sites in order to assist with the delivery of 500 new affordable homes across the city.

  • East West Rail

Created by Matthew // 2 threads

The East West Rail project connecting Cambridge with Oxford and beyond.

Discussion for issues where East West Rail crosses existing cycle routes or creates the potential for new connections, particularly to new stations, but also to ensure that EWR does not become a barrier to cycling where it passes.

  • Mill Road (transporation) Survey (for edit)

Created by Aldo // 1 thread

In the coming weeks we, UoC Students from the Cambridge Hub, are going to do a survey on Mill Road in order to find out how people get to Mill Road and how they interact with it. The survey will be compared with the survey done last November in order to build momentum for the car-free Mill Road project.

We would love your input. Please give suggestions below.

For the survey, click on the link below.

Deadline for edits is this friday.

  • Vehicle free tradespeople

Created by Nick Flynn // 1 thread

A list of carpenters, cleaners, electricians, plumbers and other tradespeople who can attend jobs in Cambridge without needing a car parking space (for example those arriving by cargo bike) would be a useful resource.

It could be used by people who cannot offer car parking, or those who would prefer to choose someone who can arrive by sustainable transport.

  • Station Road Histon - close to through traffic?

Created by Joe Adam // 1 thread

Station Road in Histon seems to have a large, and in my view inappropriate amount of through traffic.
I assume the majority of the traffic is attempting to avoid the traffic lights and the Green and shave some time of their drive through Histon.
There is a large amount of foot and cycle traffic along this road, as the direct route between two schools with many parents having children at both (infant and junior).
The foot paths are very narrow and the amount of traffic makes cycling (espcially with children) intimidating.
I think the situation (for people on bikes and foot at least) could very cheaply be massively improved by blocking Station road to through traffic, restoring thee road to what it should be, a quiet residential street.
I suppose this would lead to some traffic jams, at least at first until people get used to it.

I've recently spoken to several people, mostly other parents, who have similar opinions. Does anyone have a view on a good way forward in terms of campaigning on this?
I wondered about trying to set up a petition, which I could circulate amount parents to try and show that there could be significant support for this. Or course there may also be significant backlash.... Or should I try and talk to the parish council first. Any thoughts welcome.
I've suggested this to the parish council several times (as have other parents I discover) but nothing has yet happened (I've not even had a reply...)

  • S/0101/18/CC Histon - New Primary School north of Garden Walk

Created by Matthew // 1 thread

Proposes new access onto Glebe Way cutting across shared-use pavement, interrupting it, putting give-way markings on the pavement and dropping the kerbs. Visibility splays are drawn to to the kerb instead of to the back of the pavement.

Proposed pedestrian crossing further south will also place poles, obstructions and potential conflict into the narrow shared-use pavement.

This is a real mess considering that they have plenty of space to widen the pavement and do it right.

    ...

Erection of a 2FE (420 place) primary school and single storey 52 place pre-school nursery with associated vehicle and pedestrian access, car and cycle parking, vehicular drop off area with landscaping and playing fields, a pedestrian crossing, footpath widening and ancillary works.

  • Planning application responders

Created by Matthew // 2 threads

I'm thinking of convening a workshop or possibly simply an informal gathering (possibly at a pub or cafe) to discuss techniques and ideas for responding to planning applications. The timing is right, I think, with the approval of the new Local Plans for Cambridge and South Cambridgeshire.

All are welcome, whether you already participate or are just interested in getting involved.

I would like to gauge interest first and then we can pick a suitable time and place.
